A Communication on adult education was adopted by the Commission in recent days. It asks member states to step up their collaboration with Brussels to support – also through adequate investments – the EU plan of action for adult education and training with the objective of “removing the barriers to the involvement of adults in learning activities and improving quality and effectiveness in the sector”. It’s never too late to learn, and therefore the Commission’s plan of action is aimed at putting in place an “effective system” of education and training for adults in the entire territory of the Union. The plan should also include significant improvements in the EU-wide recognition of educational qualifications. The Commission urges the competent national authorities to “increase their own participation in the five following sectors: analysing the impact of reforms in other educational branches on adult education and training; improving the quality of services; increasing the possibility of obtaining a qualification of at least one level higher than the previous one; accelerating the process of assessment and recognition of the results of learning for more disadvantaged groups; and improving the control of the adult education and training sector.
