Spain: the Week of Spiritual Cinema

Eleven Spanish dioceses have decided to “go to the cinema”. The Week of Spiritual Cinema, introduced four years ago, is especially aimed at the young. But this year’s event is involving for the first time eleven dioceses, including Barcelona, Bilbao, Toledo and Avila. Promoted by the organization Signis Spagna – recently established – this year’s festival has the title “With You” and is devoted to the theme of friendship. It will be held in November, on various dates, depending on diocese. Its aim is to “help teachers and pupils to see a cinema of quality to foster a dialogue between the heart of man and the infinite, a cinema that propagates universal values and models of civic society, and that also fosters dialogue between the country and a culture of peace”. The films to be screened during the Week are proposed to schools. Experts will explain them and offer teaching aids to encourage discussion of them in classrooms. The stories were chosen because “they send out a message of hope in spite of the dramatic situations described”.
