Spain: priorities of the diocese of Valencia

The archdiocese of Valencia has published its “Pastoral Priorities” for the pastoral year 2007-2008. They include the need to reinforce the “centrality of the Eucharist in the life of the Christian community” and the family’s transmission of faith to the younger generations. The publication contains some proposals aimed at all the parishes and Christian communities: first, “paying careful attention to preparing, among the various Sunday masses, a solemn eucharistic celebration open to the participation of all the members of the community”, especially families. Second, the parishes are encouraged to inform the various groups of pastoral workers of “the salient points of the Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis”. As regards the priority of the transmission of the faith to the younger generations, the document proposes that “once a month a meeting for all catechists be held”, with the presence of a priest who accompanies the groups of catechists during the course for their formation and spirituality. It also invites all parishes to convene “groups of adolescents and youth” for their formation, for eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer. To encourage another of the pastoral priorities, namely the presence of families in which the faith is lived and transmitted, the archdiocese of Valencia recommends all parishes and Catholic schools to “promote, at least once every three months, meetings with parents to foster their involvement in the transmission of the faith and to examine the more important contents of pastoral teaching on the family”.
