The Balkan summer school for volunteers was held in Russe, capital of the diocese of Nicopoli, from 2 to 6 July. Organized by the local Caritas, the summer school was attended by representatives from Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria. The focal points of the course were such questions as the insertion of volunteers in the pastoral work of the parishes, the specific features of Christian volunteer service and animation activities. The volunteers from all the countries of the Balkan peninsula shared practical experience in the centre for disabled children and in the centre for assistance to the elderly. There was also an environmental project involving the cleaning of the pier of the city on the Danube. Time was also dedicated each day to prayer and to the Eucharist, led by the parish priest of Russe Cathedral, Father Walter Gorra.
