XX WYD: THE VIGIL WITH THE YOUNG. BENEDICT XVI, IT IS NOT IDEOLOGIES THAT SAVE THE WORLD, BUT ONLY TURNING TO GOD (3)

"The saints – continued the Pope in his reflection in Marienfeld – are the true reformers. Now, I would like to express it in an even more dramatic way: only from the saints, only from God comes the true revolution, the final change of the world". In the twentieth century, "we experienced the revolutions, whose common plan was not to wait any longer for God’s action but to take the fate of the world in our own hands. And we have seen that, in doing this, a human and partial point of view was always taken as an absolute measure for guidance. The absolutisation of what is not absolute but relative is called totalitarianism. It does not free man, but takes off his dignity and reduces him to slavery. It is not ideologies that save the world, but only turning to the living God". Benedict XVI, who addressed the young by calling them "dear friends", then warned them: "Many are those who speak of God; hatred is also preached and violence is committed in the name of God. Therefore, it is important to discover the true face of God. The three Wise Men from the East found it when they prostrated themselves in front of the Child of Bethlehem". In Jesus Christ, "the true face of God appeared". This means "we do not build a private God for ourselves, a private Jesus, but that we believe in and prostrate ourselves in front of that Jesus who is shown us by the Scriptures and whom, in the great procession of the faithful called Church, proves Himself to be alive, always by our side and at the same time always in front of us".
