XX WYD: CATECHESIS. MGR. CAFFARRA (ITALY), REASON AND FAITH, THE TWO LEGS OF THE PILGRIM

” “"Being pilgrims, just like the three wise men, means to be astonished at life, to look for answers to the big questions that one has in one’s heart: where we are, who we are, where we are going". These are the words addressed by the archbishop of Bologna, mgr. Carlo Caffarra, to the young Italians gathered in the parish church of St. Anne for the catechesis during the WYD of Cologne. The pilgrim’s journey is that of he "who knows where to go and has in his heart the wish to reach a destination", as opposed to the wanderer, another walker who however "has no wish and simply lets himself be attracted by something or other, with no plans for his journey". While inviting the young to opt for the pilgrim’s style, Caffarra recalled "the two legs that are needed to walk through the pilgrimage of life": reason and faith. "Be careful not to reduce your faith to a few feelings – ended the archbishop – but be reasonable believers, aware of what you believe in, and able to tell the reasons why it’s beautiful to believe in Christ".
