XX WYD: THE ASSASSINATION OF FRÈRE ROGER. THE SWISS BISHOPS, A BRIGHT STAR FOR MANY PEOPLE

"Dismay and sadness" at the news of the death of the founder of the Ecumenical Community of Taizé, frère Roger Schütz. This is expressed by the Swiss Bishops Conference in today’s release. In the release, the bishops recall "his efforts for peace and his spiritual testimony as well as his efforts for the unity of the Christians", which "made him become a bright star for many people. With his violent death – add the bishops – frère Roger has become somehow similar to his great Master, Jesus Christ". The young Swiss who are in Cologne for the WYD, led by the bishop in charge of the young pastoral, mgr. Denis Theurillat, expressed their sympathy to the Community of Taizé: "Frère Roger’s efforts for the young – claims mgr. Theurillat – makes the Swiss who are here at the WYD feel particularly close to him and to his community. This common sympathy at such a hard time for the Community of Taizé is a sign of deep unity in ecumenical commitment".
