Horst Koehler,the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, addressed a greeting message in the Cologne stadium during the opening Mass of the WYD. Before 100 thousand youngsters all standing up, who accompanied the speech with a cheer, the President added: "Only together can we create and protect peace in our unique world, as well as guarantee justice and safeguard the environment". Koehler then underlined the importance of the presence of young people and apart from catholics, "protestants, and believers of other religions". Lastly, the President invited young people to build an international network of friendship and solidarity to create a future of peace.
