XX WYD: "STOP THE DEPORTATIONS OF ROMANIES TO KOSOVO", THE CONDEMNATION OF AN ECUMENICAL ASSOCIATION; IN MÜNSTER 120 FAMILIES HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPATRIATED

” “"Stop the deportations of Romany families from Germany towards a dangerous future in Kosovo": such an appeal has been rung at the WYD by the volunteers of an ecumenical association of Münster, "Ökumenischer Zusammenschluss christlicher Eine-/Dritte-Welt-Gruppen der Stadt Münster" (Münster ecumenical union of Christian groups for a united world and the poor countries). The association condemns – also with a booth installed at an event organised by the diocese of Münster – what has been happening over the last few months in Germany, i.e. the forced repatriations to Kosovo, where they risk becoming the victims of violence and ethnic discrimination. These are hundreds of Romany families that had escaped 6 years ago during the war. "Due to misinformation – explained Elisabeth and Theo Temme, two volunteers of the association – and to the strict enforcement of the right of asylum Act, many Romany people who had taken refuge in Germany have not been able to obtain a final status, and now the Government has decided they have to be deported. In Münster, 120 families have already been repatriated and another 69 are taking the same chance". The German Federal Government – as reported by some German organisations that are collecting signatures to be submitted to the European national authorities and to the United Nations – has actually signed an agreement with Unmik (the UN unit located in Kosovo) for the repatriation of 300-500 Romany, Askali and Egyptian people every month. The petition asks for "the immediate end of deportations", the granting of a security charter for Romany families from former Yugoslavia and the calling of an international conference on the situation of asylum seekers and refugees.
