XX WYD: CAPOEIRA AND BERIMBAU FROM BRAZIL, BOLIVIA AND MEXICO ASKING FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE

” “They dance the capoeira at the sound of the berimbau, the drum and the tambourine, bringing the sunshine, the cheerfulness and the liveliness of Brazil under the grey sky of Germany. Thus a group of young Brazilians from the State of Ceará livens up, with its cheerful presence, the days of Cologne. It has been a long journey, but their tiredness softens in the enthusiasm of being there. All of them have joined "Nova vida", a social scheme for schooling, religious education and entertainment for children and teenagers. Aline Silvia is just 16, but she already teaches contemporary dancing to children. "I am glad to be here and make new friends – she said. I hope the Pope will help the world find peace". Bolivians are no less lively. Some German boys are taking pictures of their unfurled flag. "I wish all young people may learn to live together in peace – claimed Ericka Araipi, a 15-year-old catechist – and all social political and economic barriers may disappear". They are led by a Polish Franciscan friar, who has been working at a mission in Santa Cruz for 22 years: "I am Bolivian by now – explained padre Felix Skirypair -. I work with the diocesan Caritas to help the campesinos. Bolivia badly needs peace, I hope the WYD may draw attention to our problems as well". A similar wish comes from Mexico: "We wish social, cultural and ethnic differences may be overcome – highlighted Elias Castillo, a 19-year-old member of a group of 71 people from the diocese of Tula -. There is too much injustice in Latin America".
