XX WYD: THE YOUTH CRY OUT: "WE’RE NOT AFRAID OF HOOLIGANISM AND VIOLENCE"

The atmosphere of festivity and joy among the youth who have come to Germany from all of the world for the 20th World Youth Day has not been spoilt by the news from Volkenroda, a little town in eastern Germany, where today, three young people, masked and carrying an air-gun, were arrested after they attacked the tent housing a WYD Info point. "Wanting to be together with young people from around the world – says Gloria Cutuli, 20 years old, from Sicily – makes us forget all fears. A lot of people tried to discourage me from coming here because of the recent terrorist attacks in various parts of the world, but I believe that where there is faith in God, there shouldn’t be fear". With her friends, hosted in the diocese of Aachen, every evening they recite the Rosary praying for the WYD to be successful. "We want to communicate serenity to our peers – Gloria goes on to say – reminding them that following the Cross of Christ entails suffering and fatigue, but also a lot of joy". Also Cassandra Perl, a sixteen year-old student from Pittsburgh (United States), on her first trip to Europe, is convinced that "a response to violence can come from all the young people of good will from around the world".  "Young people of all confessions – says Cassandra – can come together to form a chain of love and brotherhood that can finally bring some peace into the world".
