“Give time to the new Palestinian Government to find its place and show its intentions”. This is asked by the World Church Council (Wcc) to the European Union, after that, in the last few days, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU passed a resolution to temporarily stop funding the Executive Committee led by Hamas. The EU resolution, as is known, comes from the fact Hamas has not committed itself to give up violence, to recognise Israel and the treaties that have been signed so far. In a letter addressed to the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ursula Plassnik, the Wcc warns of the potential consequences of such resolution, such as “aggravating the sufferings of the Palestinian population and the risks of the peace process”. Hence the request to the EU “to be constructively patient” and make the most of the democratic votes cast by the Palestinians as “an opportunity for making real progress in the peace process”. In its letter, the Wcc condemns once again “every form of violence against civilians”. “If violence is incompatible with democracy and peace, it is also incompatible for the Israeli and Palestinian authorities”.
