COUNCIL OF EUROPE: WOMEN TRADE ALERT FOR THE WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN GERMANY

” “A risk of sexual exploitation and therefore of recruiting women slaves on the occasion of the next World Football Championship in Germany. This is about a possible trade that might involve 30,000 to 60,000 women. The alarm has been given by the Council of Europe, which asks the European countries to take measures to prevent such risk.” “"It is not about choosing whether to authorise or prohibit prostitution – states the Swiss MP Vermot Mangold, who presented the report, discussed in Strasbourg today – The real problem is to protect the safety and human rights of many girls who risk being deported from their countries to fill up the huge brothels of Berlin and of the other cities that will play host to the World Football Championship”. As it urged to pass the European Convention on the Trade of Human Beings, which no member state of the Council of Europe has signed yet, the Parliamentary Assembly put forward some measures to identify and protect women. They include a multilingual telephone number to assist the victims of the trade. As well as reporting their pimps, the victims can find psychological assistance in their language and hospitality in special assistance centres. Nevertheless, for this measure of the Council to be effective, the Parliamentary Assembly hopes "all football players and football professionals will do all they can to spread the alert".” “
