” “The “Popetown” commercial, a series which had already been contested in Great Britain in the past, broadcasted in Germany on MTV, was condemned by the German Bishops Conference, which through its secretary, P. Hans Langendörfer SJ, published a press release on April 10th. “The commercial broadcasted by MTV”, reads the release, “just a few days before Good Friday and the Easter celebrations is a provocation for the Christians of Germany. The way Jesus Christ Crucified is shown in this commercial ridicules the fundamental principles of the Christian religion. The German Bishops Conference harshly condemns the commercial and will flle a complaint with the German Advertisement Council. We have not lost hope yet”, reads on the document, “that, by talking with the MTV management, the commercial can be put off so as to respect the religious feelings of the Christians of our country. In addition, we will ask for a check by the authorities responsible for communication in the Länder (“Landesmedienanstalt”) and the Commission for the protection of children in mass media (“Kommission für Jugendmedienschutz der Landesmedienanstalten” – (KJM), so that they can check if this commercial is compatible with the applicable law”.
