MIGRATION: MGR. MIGLIORE (HOLY SEE), “PROTECTING THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF ALL MIGRANTS, WITHOUT DISTINCTIONS “

“Hopefully, the resolution passed by the world’s leaders, to take steps to safeguard the respect and protection of the human rights of all migrants, labourers and their families, will actually be implemented to the benefit of all peoples, without distinction". These are the words of mgr. Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, in his speech given in New York yesterday, in front of the 39th session of the Commission on population and development of the UN Economic and Social Council. Although "the inevitable and unstoppable phenomenon of migration (which concerns over 190 million people across the world) is often considered a problem" and "a threat”, commented Migliore, its “impact on the economy of the destination countries is usually favourable”. “In the medium- and long-term – he went on – migration can even produce employment and net tax income”. As to the native countries, the Vatican delegate highlighted that "the migration of skilled employees can thwart potential development”; however, he noticed, “skilled migrants who keep in touch with their native countries can promote the transfer of technology and funds”. “But migration is not just an economic issue – he concluded -; now, we must explore its social impact on the destination countries as well”; in particular, "in those places in which migrants still do not perfectly fit in”.
