BENEDICT XVI: "THE YEAR THAT IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE REMAINS IN OUR MEMORY" (2)

Inspired by the subjects of marriage and the family, his trip to Valencia, Spain. As to it, Benedict XVI expressed "concern for the laws on unmarried couples". "When new legal forms are created that make marriage relative – he stated –, the renunciation to a final bond also obtains, as it were, a legal seal". No less worrying is "making gender difference relative. Thus a man and women who are together are equated to a same-sex couple". To the accusations of interference of the Church "in such businesses", the Pope responded with "the duty of the believers" to "speak up to defend man". In speaking of his trip to Bavaria, the "big topic" of which was "God", Benedict XVI spoke of "priesthood and dialogue". "The priest – he explained – must know God from within and bring Him to men: this is the priority service that mankind needs", and celibacy "can only be understood and experienced on the grounds of this fundamental inspiration". As to dialogue, Benedict XVI recalled Regensburg: "it becomes more and more clear how much the world needs dialogue between faith and reason … Reason needs the Logos, which is at the beginning and which is our light; faith needs dialogue with modern reason, in order to realise its own greatness and stand up to its responsibilities".
