POLAND: MGR. WIELGUS (WARSAW), "A PLANNED ATTACK" FROM THE PRESS ” “” “

The new archbishop of Warsaw, mgr. Stanis³aw Wielgus, firmly rejects the charge of having collaborated with the Communist intelligence service from the late Sixties to 1990, a charge published by the weekly "Gazeta Polska". Mgr. Wielgus thinks such charges are a "planned attack", maybe "with a view to his receiving a new appointment". The archbishop of Lublin, mgr. Józef ¯yciñski, said through his spokesman that a special commission he had established to check for undercover secret agents amidst the lecturers of the Catholic University of Lublin (of which mgr. Wielgus had been the rector for 9 years), found no evidence in support of the charges published by the weekly. The primate of Poland, card. Józef Glemp, on highlighting the honesty of his successor, stated that "he strongly believes in his moral and civilian integrity".” ” ” “
