THE GREAT LAKES: BISHOPS INVITE TO FORGIVENESS AND RECONCILIATION

Gratitude for Benedict XVI’s message and appreciation for the initiative of the Heads of State and Government, wishing the work done so far will not be in vain and that the commitments undertaken will be fulfilled with courage and farsightedness. This is the text of the Declaration of the Bishops of the Bishops Conferences of Eastern Africa (Amecea) and the Region, that took part in the International Conference of the Great Lakes, which took place in Nairobi a few days ago. "Inspired by the Pontiff’s message, we pledge – write the bishops – ourselves to promote the values contained in the "Treaty on security, stability and development’ that has been adopted by the Conference. The Church espouses the initiative of the striving for reconciliation and forgiveness between people, for the sake of a peaceful cohabitation. A culture of tolerance, patience and forgiveness must be fostered". The Bishops exhort "lay people to respond to the challenge of their calling and their mission: to be the salt of the earth", and invite them "to take responsibilities within society, including political and administrative tasks". ” ” ” “
