"Making migration a choice rather than a necessity": this is the exhortation made by mgr. Silvano M.Tomasi, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN and the International Institutions in Geneva, during his speech at the 92nd Session of the International Organisation for Migration (Oim), on December 1st. In the text, published today by the Newsroom, mgr. Tomasi finds a "sensible" attitude in the last few months towards migration and its opportunities in economic and demographic terms, etc. But in his opinion "the way of looking at migration needs to be changed, as it must be set outside the national boundaries, in the perspective of a globalisation of solidarity, to live together in peace in one’s own country and all over the world". Mgr. Tomasi lists a few "conditions" for a positive approach to the subject, for instance not to convert commitment towards security "into a restrictive approach that prevents migrants entering a country". Immigrants, he highlights, must "be put at the centre of the current debate sand policies" as the protagonists of a "shared project". (to be continued)
