"For centuries, the relations between the Christian and Muslim communities in Syria have been harmonious, and the country is a unique place to offer to the world the example of a peaceful cohabitation and tolerance between the followers of different religions": it was said this morning in the Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI to the new ambassador of Syria to the Holy See, Makram Obeid, during the audience for the delivery of credentials. As he recalled "the armed conflicts that have lately threatened peace and stability all over the Middle East", Benedict XVI highlighted that "the Holy See thinks solutions are possible under the international law". In addition, the Pope mentioned the Catholic community in Syria, which is "longing to play its part in the national life", and then stated he "particularly appreciated the recent legislation promoted by the Syrian Government to recognise the legal status of the Catholic Churches". This can lead he concluded to solving the "issue of the properties of the Church that have been taken over by the State. It is a sign of really mature relations, when such issues can be discussed openly, honestly and with mutual respect".
