LEBANON: BISHOPS, CONVENING PARLIAMENT TO AVOID BLOODSHED

” “Urgent calling of Parliament to avoid bloodshed. This is the request of the Lebanese Maronite Bishops faced with the risk of serious internal conflicts that see the pro-Syrian Hezbollah opposing to the pro-Western Government of Fuad Sinora, even if it starting to talk of negotiations again. The invitation to the president of Parliament, the Shiite Nabih Berri, to convene Parliament arrived this morning and is contained in a note in which the Lebanese Bishops highlight the risk that "the street protests and the fierce speeches that go with them will not lead to a solution but might lead to bloodshed". In the meantime, the parties keep submitting their proposals to try to find a solution to the crisis. On one side, Hezbollah asking to extend the current Government to new pro-Syrian ministers having a veto on the Government’s decisions. On the other side, the prime minister Sinora willing to extend the Executive to 30 ministries, 19 for the anti-Syrian Parliamentary majority, 9 to the pro-Damascus opposition and 2 to independent parties without the right of veto or resignation. The purpose is to prevent the two fronts interfering with each other. Hezbollah refused and continues the street mobilization that is by now in its sixth day. ” “
