The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, gave his support to the campaign of the Catholic Bishops of England, Scotland and Wales against the renewal of nuclear weapons, which are called a mass of "indiscriminate and horrendous" weapons. Tony Blair’s intention to renew a large part of the nuclear weapons and allocate twenty billion pounds, 28 and a half billion euros, for the modernisation of Trident missiles, the Primate of the "Church of England" explained that "he sees nothing positive in maintaining a nuclear deterrent". "As it happened during the Cold War, we are talking of weapons that are indiscriminate in their effects, and their long-term effects on a whole physical environment would be horrendous”, said Williams. The final decision on such weapons is to be taken by the British Government in March 2007. The Government will engage in consultation over these months with several agencies, associations and institutions that will give their opinions on the subject. The leaders of the Methodist, Baptist and United Reformed Churches are also against the renewal and replacement of the Trident.
