HOLY LAND: THE MESSAGE FOR LENT FROM THE PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM, MICHEL SABBAH

"The cry of the multitudes, starved for joy, peace and love", as quoted by Benedict XVI in his Lenten message, is the cry of those who live in the Holy Land, where "with fear, anxiery and insecurity, the search for justice, peace and reconciliation remains a distant mirage". These are the words of the message for Lent of the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah. "The Palestinian elections brought up new forces that are taking our fate in their hands – states Sabbah – and we are waiting for the Israeli elections to see what our fate will be". Before all this, "Lent reminds us that, as we walk to God, we walk with all men, in whose faces we see a reflection of God’s image and with whom we share the joys and sufferings to build our society. This is why Christians must not be afraid. Our life is an endless fight to persevere in our walk to God, a fight to turn all our life into a time of grace". (to be continued)
