GYPSIES: "GUIDANCE" FROM THE PAPAL COUNCIL FOR MIGRANTS, NO TO RACISM AND XENOPHOBIA. A BISHOP IN CHARGE OF THE PASTORAL (4)

” “At a pastoral level, the document places emphasis on the encounter between the special pastoral for the gypsies and the ordinary pastoral of the parish churches. Baptism, for instance, which is "the most sought-after sacrament", will have to be taken care of in terms of language and should be celebrated before the whole parish community. The Guidance document advises that the methods and means of evangelisation should be more in keeping with the gypsy culture, such as music, videos, pilgrimages to the sacred places of the saints associated with the family history, the cult of the dead experienced as a community. According to mgr. Marchetto, "we should consider the idea of translating the Bible, the liturgical texts and the prayer books into the languages spoken by the different ethnic groups of the different regions". The document however tries to steer readers away from the risk – as substantiated by facts – that the gypsies "may fall prey to cults". This is why it suggests that a special role should be given to new ecclesial events, which "can be a real place for the gypsies to express their religious feelings". The news include the suggestion to appoint an experienced bishop, within the Bishops’ Conferences, to promote the pastoral of the gypsies. The presence of "bridging communities", priests or religious men or women who live amidst the gypsies, often in caravans, should also be encouraged. As well as the gypsies’ desire to be in the limelight, with "gypsy laymen" working in the pastoral and new vocations to the priesthood. In Europe, about thirty priests and religious men and women belong to different gypsy ethnic groups.” “
