“Next March 24th I will hold a Consistory during which I will appoint the new members of the Cardinals’ Council”. The announcement was given today by Benedict XVI in the Aula Paolo VI, at the end of the general audience. Fifteen new cardinals will be appointed: twelve under 80 who will join the list of the 120 electors, plus three older priests. The former ones include Stanislaw Dwiwisz, William Levada and Carlo Caffarra. “This announcement continued Benedict XVI comes at the right time, on the occasion of the Feast of Saint Peter’s Chair, because the cardinals’ task” is to help "the successor of Peter in his apostolic service" and "The cardinals are a sort of Senate". The selection of the nominees, who came from the diocese of the whole world, the Pope highlighted, “reflects the universal nature of the Church”. (to be continued)
