SWITZERLAND: APPEAL OF THE BISHOPS FOR THE HOLY LAND, "LET’S GIVE A SIGN OF SOLIDARITY TO THE CHRISTIANS OF THE ARAB WORLD"

A "vibrant appeal" to the Swiss Catholics for them to give, during the Holy Week, "a generous sign of solidarity to the Christians of the Arab world, a sign of encouragement to the Church of the Arabs". This was put forward by the Swiss Bishops in a message in support of the "Fund raising of the Holy Week 2006 for the Christians of the Holy Land", an initiative that is promoted every year by the Swiss Association of the Holy Land. "The population of the countries of the Bible – write the bishops – have deep faith" on which they pin "their courage". Sadly enough, though, "the real economic and social scenario is forcing many of them out of the country". Hence the moral duty of the European countries to "factually help" the population, also by taking part in pilgrimages to the holy places of Christianity. "This means – write the bishops – giving a vital contribution to the population of the Holy Land".
