ENVIRONMENT: DIMAS (EU COMMISSIONER), “ONE YEAR AFTER THE KYOTO PROTOCOL, PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE, BUT THE CHALLENGE GOES ON”

” ““Climatic changes are a lethal threat to the future stability and prosperity of our societies. One year after the enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol, great progress has been made against such a relevant challenge. In particular, the World Conference on Climate Changes, held in Montreal last December, completed the handbook on the rules for enforcement of the protocol and supported the position of the EU, according to which the time has come to start discussing a future action on an international scale”. This was stated by the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol (February 16th 2005). “The fight against climate changes can be won – added Dimas – but, before the relentless and quick increase in the Earth’s temperature, upon the expiration of the Kyoto’s deadlines in 2012, we will need more far-ranging plans. Decisions about how to do after 2012 will require the involvement of all the main emission-producer countries, without neglecting the need for development of the less developed countries”. The EU, recalled Dimas, “is showing the way to face climate changes with proactive measures, such as the system for the exchange of emission quotas, and other contributions, such as the Commission Document dated February 2005 about the principles that should inspire the future climate system”.
