THE POPE AT ANGELUS: A WISH TO THE TURIN OLYMPIC GAMES, "MAY THEY BE INSPIRED BY FRATERNITY", AND TO THE VATICAN RADIO STATION

At the end of Angelus, the Pope greeted the organisers and the athletes who are taking part in the Winter Olympic Games. "The XX Winter Olympic Games opened in Turin two days ago – said Benedict XVI. I send a warm greeting to the organisers, to the members of the International Olympic Committee and to all the athletes who have come from every part of the world. I wish this beautiful sporting contest may be inspired by the Olympic values of loyalty, joy and fraternity, thus giving a contribution to world peace". And still in Italian, the Pope recalled that yesterday, Feebruary 12th, was the 75th anniversary of the opening of Radio Vaticana, the Vatican Radio Station, and the first radio message sent to the world by Pope Pius XI, who had entrusted scientist Guglielmo Marconi with the building of the Vatican radio station. "Through the medium of radio, and then television – said the Pope, the message of the Gospel and the words of the Popes managed to reach all people more quickly and more easily".
