THE POPE AT ANGELUS: THINKING OF THE SICK, "ESPECIALLY THE LONELY, POOR AND DESERTED ONES"

Thinking of the sick, "especially those who, everywhere in the world, as well as being in poor health, are also lonely, poor and outcast". This was done yesterday mornining by Pope Benedict XVI before the Marian prayer. Yesterday, which was the liturgical commemoration of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes, the Church celebrated the World Day of the Sick, which this year had its major celebrations in Adelaide, Australia, including an international meeting on mental health. "Siickness – said the Pope – is a typical trait of the human condition", but just on these Sundays – he added – Mark’s Gospel presents Jesus engaged in preaching and healing the sick in the villages of Galilee. Christ – said the Pope – is therefore "the real healer of humanity that the Heavenly Father sent into the world to heal man", "the hand of God stretched out towards mankind to pull it out of the quicksands of sickness and death, to make them stand up again on the firm rock of godly love". In his reflection, the Pope also recalled "those who, in hospitals and every other health care facility, look after the sick and work hard to heal them".
