THE POPE: "DON’T REDUCE FAITH TO ACTIVISM OR POLITICAL CUNNING" AND GAIN AN INSIGHT OF "THE TRUTHS DISCOVERED BY REASON" (2)

But "sometimes – he specified – some statements made by scientific knowledge have even been opposed" to the truths revealed by faith. "This can have somehow puzzled the faithful – he commented – and may also have hindered the proclamation and reception of the Gospel”. And he suggested, "Every study that sets out to gain an insight of the knowledge of the truths discovered by reason, in the certainty that there is no competition between reason and faith, is therefore crucially important”. “By delving into the knowledge of Christ all the time", he said, "we can show to the men and women of our time that faith in Him is not irrelevant to the fate of mankind: it is actually the achievement of all that is genuinely human. Only from this perspective will we be able to offer convincing answers to the questing man”: “Nowadays, the task of evangelisation requires such a commitment, as its urgent priority. The dialogue between faith and reason, religion and science, offers not just an opportunity to show to today’s man, in a more effective and persuasive manner, the soundness of faith in God, but also to show that the final achievement of every genuine human aspiration lies in Jesus Christ. In this sense, a serious evangelising effort cannot overlook the questions that arise also from the latest scientific discoveries and philosophic aspirations”.
