EUROPE: WALLSTRÖM (EU COMMISSION), "THERE IS A DITCH BETWWEN CITIZENS AND PUBLIC BODIES". PRESENTATION OF THE WHITE BOOK ON COMMUNICATION POLICY (2)

"Communication is inseparable from its contents. Citizens expect the EU to provide prosperity, solidarity and security in view of globalisation. A communication policy therefore requires the EU to implement an effective political plan". The White Book, presented today by the Commission in Brussels, insists on the necessary relation between the successful delivery of the EU action, the tools and forms of communication between citizens and public bodies, the citizens’ new confidence in the EU as a whole. "We found many problems – stated today Margot Wallström, vice-president of the Executive Committee -: there are no common principles, to be used to accomplish EU-wide communication policies; in the current scenario, information moves from public bodies to citizens, but not the other way round", with no feedback in terms of indications, suggestions, complaints. But first and foremost, Wallström explains that "so far, our strategy has not highlighted well enough how the mass-media have transformed and even less the way the public opinion has changed. We have to start from there".
