EUROPE: BROK (EU PARLIAMENT), “WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCION ARE THE MOST SERIOUS THREAT TO INTERNATIONAL SECURITY”(2)

” “Brok’s report about the EU foreign policy, which is to be reviewed tomorrow by the assembly gathered in Brussels, laments the fact “often, the Parliament’s resolutions and reports about the geographical areas which are of interest for the EU have not been considered by the Council and the Commission”. Parliament demands more involvement in the definition of the guidelines of the EU foreign policy, and a petition to the Court of Justice is looming ahead. In addition, the EU MPs claim that “the provision about human rights and democracy should be included in all the new agreements between the EU and the third countries”. The document to be reviewed by Parliament insists on some critical points: the Balkans are regarded as a priority area for the 25 member countries, not least because “the future accession of the Western Balkan countries will be a further step towards the reunification of Europe”. A “factual solution” is sought for Kosovo. The need is felt instead of developing relations with China, “so as to make progress not just in trade and economy, but also in human rights and democracy”. Otherwise, “the embargo on weapons should stay in place”. As to the Holy Land, Brok’s report asks the “Council to renew its efforts within the Quartet to reopen negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians”.
