ECUMENICAL ASSEMBLY: LETTER TO THE CHRISTIANS OF EUROPE, "JOIN US IN THIS JOURNEY!"

"Join us in this journey!" These are the closing words of the "Letter to the Christians of Europe" that the 150 delegates (from 44 European countries representing all the Christian Churches of the continent) gathered in Rome for the first meeting in preparation of the Third Ecumenical Assembly of Sibiu (4-8 September 2007) sent out this morning at the end of the meeting. "We have committed ourselves – write the delegates – to a shared journey, we have tried to create a climate of mutual trust and understanding, by working and praying together. We wanted to experience a spirituality deeply rooted in the Word of God. Through prayer and action, we trust we will revive enthusiasm in the ecumenical journey." The Letter invites the Christians of Europe to share this commitment. "Every Christian – write the Churches – is welcome to join this pilgrimage of hope, to give a common testimony, by walking with Christ in search of a new bent for Europe. Our continent has made great progress in politics and culture, yet exploitation, oppression and violence still hinder our journey". "We ask you, brothers and sisters in Christ – reads on the Letter – to commit yourselves to the agenda of the European institutions that also work to bring hope in our continent. The light of Christ will help us work towards reconciliation and unity in our torn world". (to be continued)
