“The victory of Hamas fills me with concern and disappointment”: this is the first reaction of the President of the Central Council of Jewish in Germany, Paul Spiegel, in a statement made about the outcome of the Palestinian elections. “Hamas is a terrorist organisation and it’s hard to believe that terrorists, even if democratically elected, can be reliable partners in the peace process”, he continued. “The vote of the Palestinian people is certainly also the expression of rage and powerlessness for the corruption and lawlessness of the Fatah which has been ruling until now. We cannot but wait and see if the outcome of these elections is a vote for terrorism or a vote for the peaceful cohabitation of two States”, concluded Spiegel.
