"Good cooperation between the President and the Prime Minister is a logic political requirement": this is the wish of Francisco Sarsfield Cabral, director of the Catholic radio station Radio Renascença, as he commented the Portuguese elections of December 22nd published today by Ecclesia, promoted by the Portuguese Church. The bishops have not taken any official position on the elections yet. The victory of Anibal Cavaco Silva, elected President of the Republic with 50.8% of votes, according to Cabral "will be a support for the difficult measures that the Government will have to keep taking. Measures which concern the environment, social security, health care and so on, and which will cause, as they have already done, understandable discontent in those who will lose benefits". "For the first time since the reinstatement of democracy thirty years ago noticed Cabral we have a non-Leftist President. A democratic alternation in guiding the country is reasonable". "Crazy enough he added for those who see Cavaco Silva’s victory as a threat to the government’s stability, a counterpower to the Socialist executive and even the possibility of a constitutional coup, the next President I am sure will help strengthen the Government’s capability" by "balancing public finance and, from that, reviving the economy".
