EUROPE: IN LONDON TODAY, A THREE-PARTY MEETING ON THE RESUMPTION OF NUCLEAR RESEARCH IN IRAN, NO TO ARMED INTERVENTION

"Iran is not Iraq. We work with the international community to solve the matter through diplomatic and peaceful means": Jack Straw, the English Minister of Foreign Affairs, will play host in London today to his fellow Ministers from France and Germany, to discuss the resumption of nuclear research in Iran and the position that the EU should take in agreement with the UN and USA. After the urgent meeting convened in Berlin last Thursday, the European "troika" means to go on with diplomatic means, maybe asking for the intervention of the UN Security Council and Aiea, the International Agency for Atomic Energy which is based in Vienna and is connected with the UN building in New York. An armed intervention "in these circumstances would not be either conceivable nor appropriate", repeated Mr Straw just before the meeting, specifying that "this opinion is shared by the White House". After all, Teheran will not change its mind and confirms, with President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, that "Iran will go on with its nuclear program". One of the points on the agenda that will be discussed in London today should include the overall instability of the Middle Eastern region, the trade relations between the western countries and Iran (including oil provisions), the prevalence of international law over unilateral decisions. The EU Parliament will discuss of the situation in the Middle East and Asia at the meeting held in Strasbourg from today to next Thursday. In particular, on Wednesday attention will be drawn to Afghanistan and Chechnya, regions that have been recently affected by war and terrorism, in search of a shelter in democracy.
