SPAIN: BISHOPS, TRAFFIC RESPONSIBILITY DAY, "THINK OF YOUR FAMILIES NOT TO LOSE POINTS"

” “"If you think of your family, you’ll not lose any points": this suggestive title was used by mgr. Carmelo Echenagusia, delegated bishop of the Apostolate of the Street, for his message, sent on the occasion of Traffic Responsibility Day which is due to be celebrated next Sunday, July 2nd, in Spain. The title refers to a recent state regulation that establishes a "score licence", whereby points are taken off the driving licence (in extreme cases the driving licence can be taken away) if the driver breaches the traffic rules, as it happens in Italy and other countries. "This new provision, like other announced penalties – writes mgr. Echenagusia –, has of course a commendable purpose. Time will tell if they are effective and will benefit everyone, even if they sound like dangerous and unpopular news". The bishop directly addresses the car drivers: "Dear driver, never forget your family depend on you". Many times, your family "pray for you, so that you can come back home unharmed". Mgr. Echenagusia invites people to also think "of the other drivers, who you meet or run into on the road. Just like you, they too have a family who are waiting for them". So this is an invitation to "respect others, help others, try not to endanger their safety and their lives by hazardous or careless driving". "As much his family as yours – he states – recommend you to be prudent, to behave responsibly, not just for the points you might lose, but for your own safety and the safety of the road users".” “
