Card. Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop of Genoa, is the new Secretary of State. A release sent not long ago from the Vatican Pressroom informs that "the Holy Father has accepted, in accordance with Can. 354 of the Canon Law, the resignation of His Eminence Card. Angelo Sodano, Secretary of State, asking him however to keep his office until September 15th 2006, with all the powers associated with his office. On such date September 15th 2006 the Holy Father will appoint Card. Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop of Genoa, new Secretary of State. On such occasion, His Holiness will receive in audience the fathers superior and officers of the Secretariat of State to publicly thank Card. Angelo Sodano for the long and generous service carried out for the Holy See and to introduce to them the new Secretary of State". The appointment has been announced at the same time by the archdiocese of Genoa.
