WORLD REFUGEE DAY: HUNDREDS OF EVENTS ALL OVER THE WORLD, INCLUDING FOOTBALL MATCHES IN 20 COUNTRIES

Hundreds of events all over the world and, to coincide with the World Cup in Germany, football matches in over 20 countries, including the Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Nepal. These are the initiatives that have been promoted today by Unhcr (UN High Commission for the Refugees), on the occasion of the World Refugee Day. The subject this year is "Hope", to commemorate the dozens of millions of refugees across the world, who "even if they have lost everything – states Antonio Guterres, High Commissioner for Refugees – never give up hope". Unhcr is currently taking care of 20.8 million refugees and exiles. The events include traditional dance and music shows, sports races, fashion shows, trade fairs, movie festivals, art and photo exhibitions, poetry readings and exhibitions by refugee artists. Guterres is spending the Day at the border between Liberia and Sierra Leone, where some Liberian refugees escaped to Sierra Leone will be repatriated. In Geneva, where Unhcr is based, the city fountain will be lit in blue. In Canberra, Australia, the old Parliament and other buildings will be specially lit. An advertising campaign about refugees’ rights will be visible on the city buses of some big cities, such as Athens, Moscow, Prague, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
