An open letter to prime minister Guy Verhofstadt to ask him to grant dignity, work and peace to refugees and asylum seekers. The initiative has been promoted by the Belgian Council of Christian Churches, composed of Orthodox, Anglicans, Protestants and Catholics, on the occasion of tomorrow’s World Refugee Day. In the letter, the Council, although recognising that "the State is entitled to check its own frontiers", invites it to grant "the right of dignity to people, especially those people who live in miserable conditions", so as to "implement legal procedures" that will "unconditionally guarantee" human rights. "Migrants write the Churches are often the victims of discrimination. They feel permanently insecure about medical care, children’s education and job opportunities. An amendment to the legislation on the right of asylum cannot help considering the gaps that exist in the current legislation regarding the reception and assistance of refugees". A warning that the Churches also make to the EU member states, whose laws "cannot only aim at stopping or controlling migration in all its forms". "Migration concludes the letter is a favourable opportunity that can put the social fabric back together. Contributing to the social peace that recognises and respects the rights of men, women and children is every society’s responsibility".
