"The decision taken by the EU Parliament to promote research into embryos as part of the Seventh Research Program for 2007-2013 is a heavy defeat and a disastrous sign for the defence of embryos in Europe as well as for the protection of human rights". This is the comment of the German bishops in a release issued today about the decision taken yesterday by the EU Parliament to give financial support to research into embryo stem cells. "The EU Parliament stated the bishops , with its decision backed by a narrow majority (284 votes for, 249 votes against, editor’s note), contradicts the directives of the Justice and Equal Opportunities Commissions which rejected the proposed EU funding of any research which involves destroying embryos".
