EUROPE: THE EU-UNITED STATES SUMMIT IS BEING PREPARED IN BRUSSELS. THE AGENDA INCLUDES MIDDLE EAST, ECONOMY AND ENERGY

The community institutions are working to prepare the summit with the United States scheduled in Vienna on June 21. The Commission announced that the main subjects in the agenda would be four: "Cooperation on the foreign policy level; energy security; economy and trade; global challenges". The delegation of the European Union will be made up of the current president of the Council, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel; the president of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso; Commissioners Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Peter Mandelson; and Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik. On the other hand, the president of the United States, Georges W. Bush, will be accompanied with Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. "As for foreign policy – made known a statement by the EU Executive – Iran, the Middle East and promotion of democracy should be the main discussion items". The summit will be mentioned during the meeting of the Heads of State and Prime Ministers of the 25 members, scheduled next week. As for the Parliament, during the latest session, it confirmed "political divergences", "commercial battles", and its perplexities about the American action in the fields of respect of human rights and environment protection. However, the Members of the European Parliament believe that transatlantic partnership "is a fundamental element for the external action of the European Union", and they ask for cooperation strengthening, until the establishment of a "common action operating on the regional and worldwide level".
