ITALY: CARDINAL RUINI, “FILLING THE GAP BETWEEN RATIONALITY AND THE WORLD OF EXPERIENCE” (2)

According to Cardinal Ruini, “the challenge of the young pastoral consists in getting part of that gap, between scientific rationality and the world of experience, both to intercept the young, making oneself understandable, and to fill that gap, welding the sides, thus avoiding the dismay of the young themselves”. Then the Cardinal invited everybody “to raise and strengthen the Christian proposal in all fields of life, involving the young”, by presenting four profiles: “the one of the prayer, the preferential field to meet Christ”; “the ecclesial profile, tackling the challenge of building up a network for an integrated pastoral”; “the profile of the intelligence pastoral, which must be able to show how scientific rationality alone is not enough to answer the basic questions of man and of the necessity to conceive a creating intelligence”; and “the profile of love, recalling that the Christian message fortifies human love, too, which needs to be continually strengthened to renew itself”. Finally, the Cardinal recalled the importance of “promoting practical experiences for helping the neighbour in need, while it is wrong to preserve the young from pain, which represents one half of life”. “The key words for education to faith – concluded the Cardinal by recalling the words by Benedict XVI – are ‘falling in love with Christ’. That falling in love is fundamental for the Christian message, the core of the mission”.
