GERMANY: CARD. LEHMANN WRITES TO THE CATHOLIC PATRIARCHS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

” “"Solidarity" from the German Catholics with all those who suffer because of the fighting in Israel and Lebanon. It is expressed by card. Karl Lehmann, president of the German Bishops Conference, in a letter sent to the Catholic patriarchs in the Middle East: card. Nasrallah Sfeir, Maronite patriarch; mgr. Michel Sabbah, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem; Gregorio III Laham, Greek-Catholic patriarch. In the letter, announced today by the newsroom of the German Bishops Conference, card. Lehmann condemns the "acts of terrorism against the civil population in Lebanon and the abduction of Israeli soldiers, which have kick-started the new, latest violent conflict. Israel is entitled – writes Lehmann – to defend its existence within safe boundaries". The cardinal says he is "dismayed at these tragic developments". At the same time, the cardinal writes: "In addition, I am very worried at seeing the fragile multi-religious society of Lebanon, which had just successfully gone back on to the road of democracy, risk plunging into a frightening crisis, which is hardly controllable due to the current conflict; radicalism and political fanaticism could eventually get the upper hand".
