MIDDLE EAST: LAJOLO (HOLY SEE), "IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE IS POSSIBLE, SO IT MUST BE DONE" (2)

” “In rating the result of the Conference, the Secretary for foreign relations of the Secretariat of State states that "the fact it has been so quickly convened on the initiative of the Italian Government and has focussed its attention on the most pressing and topical problems is certainly positive", with "appreciable results". In this respect, Lajolo finds some "positive aspects": "the fact that countries from different parts of the world have gathered in the awareness of the seriousness of what is happening in Lebanon, the decision to form an international taskforce appointed by the United Nations, the commitment to give immediate humanitarian aids to the Lebanese people and guaranteed support to its reconstruction". Positive "is also the pledge made by the participants, to keep permanently in contact with each other about the further developments of the measures taken by the international community in Lebanon". According to Lajolo, a feeling of disappointment is caused by "the fact no immediate ceasefire has been asked for. The fact they only invited Israel to be as moderate as possible is also something of a problem: such invitation in itself is inevitably ambiguous, while respect for the civilian population is a specific and mandatory duty". As to the commitment of the Holy See, Lajolo does not mumble his words: "The Holy See will keep doing all it can for Lebanon to be once again that "garden" of the Middle East that it used to be".” “
