SPAIN: JAVIER 2006; MGR. SAIZ MENESES, “THE YOUNG ARE A HUGE POTENTIAL”. MEETING IN NAVARRA FROM AUGUST 4TH TO 6TH (2)

According to statistics, "just 10% of young people in Spain state they are practising Catholics, 39% say they are non-practising Catholics, 18% are uninterested, 28% are atheists or agnostics and 2% are followers of another religion”, comments mgr. Josep Àngel Saíz Meneses, bishop of Terrassa and director of the Youth Department of the Spanish Bishops Conference, who says he is however “hopeful” about the figures shown by the recent survey, "Young Spanish 2005″. “The fact 49% of young people state" they are however "Catholic does not sound negative at all to me – he states – given the world we are living in, which is becoming more and more secularised and undergoing lay-orientated social and political changes”. According to the bishop, we must be realistic about the objective situation "if we want to think of how it should be, and it is from here that the pastoral of the Church takes its cue; we must not hide the truth but work seriously towards the future”.
