HOLY LAND: PCPO, "65.1% OF PALESTINIANS IN FAVOUR OF PEACE NEGOTIATIONS WITH ISRAEL"

65.1% of Palestinians are in favour of resuming peace negotiations with Israel. 96.3% are in favour of solving the problem of the Israeli detainees in return for some advantages, with 47.2% in favour of releasing the soldiers in return for the release of the women and children detained in the Israeli prisons. These figures have been revealed by a survey conducted by Pcpo, the Palestinian Centre for Public Opinion, over a sample of 1050 adult Palestinians resident in Gaza, East Jerusalem and Cisjordan. The results, published today, come at a time in which the Israel-Palestinian conflict has extended to the Lebanese front, causing a large number of civilian casualties. The survey was not just about the affair of the kidnapped soldiers but also about the living conditions in the Territories. 76.8% of the interviewees, for some reason or other, said "they are worried about the future of their families". About this, 48.6% of Palestinians think the current embargo in the Territories "might be removed by establishing a national united government", while 24.8% believe "Israel must be recognised". Still on the political plane, Palestinians trust president Abu Mazen, 74.9% of the sample are against his resignation, and only 58.5% are against the resignation of Hamas.
