HOLY SEE: MORE INTEGRATION IN NORTH-SOUTH TRADE FLOWS

"International trade flows must try to be more integrated between the north and the south and between the south and the south, agreements that are essential for a hopeful future". This wish comes today from the Papal Council for Peace and Justice, in a statement which also expresses "grief" for the results of the meeting of the World Trade Organisation (Wto), which sounded very "uncooperative". In the document, the Papal Council repeats that "the main concern for the Holy See is equity in trade flows" which is guaranteed by the Doha agreements of five years ago, which "opened a new horizon of hope in this area", especially the "declaration about development and the reduction of poverty". A goal that can only be achieved "by spreading a multilateral system, powerfully backed by the Catholic Church", and by applying such other principles as "transparency and the full involvement of all states in the negotiations". "Hopefully – ends the document – the next G8 in Saint Petersburg will be able to take such political decisions as to turn these technical steps into operational steps".
