ISRAEL-LEBANON CONFLICT: THE WORRIES OF THE NUNCIATURES OF THE TWO COUNTRIES

The apostolic Nunciatures in Lebanon and Israel are anxiously following the conflict going on in southern Lebanon, between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah militias. "A conflict we do no want", is the dry comment made to SIR by mgr. Luigi Gatti, apostolic nuncio to Lebanon, about the ongoing fights between Israeli soldiers and Lebanese Hezbollah that burst out after the Hezbollah’s kidnapping of two servicemen with the star of David. The Nuncio ruled out "any internal mediation by the Church". "These situations are bad news and could be avoided – stated to SIR mgr. Antonio Franco, Nuncio to Israel -. These are foolish facts that are completely pointless in terms of détente and problem solving. On our part we can only wish that wisdom may prevail".
