INDIA: TERRORIST ATTACKS; ANNAN (UN), “I’M FLABBERGASTED”

He stated he was "flabbergasted at the news of the savage, inveterate terrorist attacks on Bombay’s trains", because "such acts cannot be excused in any way”: Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, comments, in a note that was published this morning, the terrorist attacks that last night caused 174 people to die and 464 to be seriously wounded on trains and in stations in the suburbs of Bombay (India). According to Annan, these terrorist attacks confirm that "terrorism is one of the worst threats to world’s peace and security” and make "the need for a coordinated action by all countries even more pressing, in order to defeat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations: no matter who commits such terrorist attacks at any time, anywhere and for any reason”. "The sequence of bombings that hit Mumbai, killed several dozens of people and wounded innocent people" has also been condemned by the Indian Bishops Conference (Cbci), who, through its spokesman father Babu Joseph, invited the population to "calmly cope with this tense moments”. Other attacks had already happened in 2001, 2003 and 2005 but they had not caused such a high number of casualties. The Indian bishops also ask that forces be joined "to defeat the evil plans" of the "antisocial characters” who have prepared the explosions. Due to the type of attacks, the Indian security executives suspect Islamic terrorism.
